DoT asks RIM to set up server in India

This news report talks about the controversy over monitoring Blackberry-to-Blackberry traffic in India. It started when Research in Motion, the Canadian company that owns Blackberry services, refused to share the decryption code with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on grounds that it is proprietary. Security agencies had earlier expressed concern that they could not monitor the data that were being sent due to the high encryption codes. It is expected that under pressure from DoT and Indian mobile operators, the company will set up a server in India to allow security agencies to monitor traffic at the gateway without having to break into the Blackberry’s secure transmission codes, putting an end to the stalemate.
