ICT in school education: A flawed policymaking process

The article analyses the current process of policy formulation with regard to the implementation of ICT in schools for enhancement of the quality of education imparted in India. The Government of India have recently formed a group to draft a policy in this regard. The disturbing fact is that this group contains members of Information Technology who have a vested interest in this which can lead to serious implications for the policy. This has already led to an approach which excludes the use free and open source software as well as
content which can provide a non-proprietary platform for the sharing of resources among the public schools of
India. The author cautions that such unless such an anomaly is corrected promptly, the very objectives of the
policy itself may be at risk and can hamper the spread of ICT to the schools of the country.
