Gender in the information society: Emerging issues

This selection of papers comes from a seminar organized by an Indian NGO, IT for Change, in April 2005. The collection offers valuable literature on areas which have largely gone unnoticed in ICT and development discourse. Using a Southern feminist lens, the authors underscore the interrelation between economic opportunities and socio-cultural hierarchies. The publication serves as an advocacy tool for stakeholders and development practitioners, to engender the information society. However, these papers do not necessarily provide a clear consensus on the issues pertaining to gender in the information society; rather, the collection symbolises the diverse voices participating within the debates, and also indicates the nature of feminist engagements with information society issues which have only recently taken shape. The document aims to provide meaningful insights to the gender discourse in South Asia on the information society.
