Open source divides IT industry

This article looks at the ongoing debate regarding adoption of Microsoft's OOXML standard as opposed to Open Document Format. It presents the views of IT majors in India on the topic, which is quite evenly divided. While OOXML promises interoperability as one its major positives, there are legitimate concerns about its effectiveness given limitations in backward compatibility and flexibility in support for browsers such as Firefox. Given this scenario, it is quite evident that the OOXML standard must address all the above concerns to be truly considered an open standard.
