Free as in freedom

A FOSS enthusiast/practitioner from Kerala, India, blogs about the policy measures initiated by the Kerala state government to promote the use of FOSS in that state. Under the political rule of the Left, Kerala has been at the forefront of promoting FOSS within the bureaucracy, government departments, schools, state government projects and so on. Kerala has led by example and this must be emulated throughout the country. Some of the major initiatives include the 'IT@ School Project' where the government introduced IT enabled education to the high schools in the state with active us of FOSS. Also, the government announced that the schools in Kerala will completely switch to Free Software in stages. Another project worth mentioning is the Right to Information initiative of the Government of Kerala to ensure transparency and efficiency in everyday functions of the government which has been created using free software.
