IT superpower : India not a hot spot for Wi-Fi

Though India is a global IT superpower, it ranks among the lowest in the world on the world Wi-Fi index, says this article that reports on this Wi-FI index and examines the developments of Wi-Fi in India. The article finds Wi-Fi especially important to consider because the top Wi-Fi countries also rank among the top 30 in the 2007 UN Human Development Index. The low wi-fi penetration in India is attributed to the relatively high cost of laptops in comparison with per capita income, low internet penetration and lack of e-governance services in many states. The provincial government of Delhi has realised the importance of wireless infrastructure and is taking steps to set up four Wi-Fi hotspots, though it remains far behind other metropolises like Berlin, New York and London. Of India's current 454 Wi-Fi hotspots, according to Wi-Fi registry Jiwire, the technology state of Karnataka has about 300 hotspots, with the majority in Bangalore.
